Mediastinal Diseases

Anatomical Structure of Mediastinum

Center of the Chest Cavity: Mediastinum

The mediastinum is the middle region between the lungs and contains vital organs such as the heart, thymus gland, esophagus, aorta, aorta, lymph nodes. The importance of this area is due to the direct impact of mediastinal diseases, including tumors, infections and cysts.

Overview of Mediastinal Diseases

Especially thymus gland diseases and lymph gland diseases such as lymphoma constitute the majority. For the thymus gland, see the information in the thymoma section.

Germ cell tumors, enlarged lymph nodes, cystic formations, pericardial diseases and neurogenic tumors are common. Cystic formations are usually benign. However, in some diseases, they may show malignant character (cancerous tissue) or evolve into cancer over time.

Mediastinal Neoplasms and Cysts

Mediastinal neoplasms are abnormal cell growths in the mediastinum. Mediastinal cysts are fluid-filled pathologic structures.

Mediastinal Tumors

Mediastinal tumors can be classified as benign or malignant.

tumor

Benign Tumors

These tumors are not cancerous and have a low tendency to grow. Examples include schwannomas and bronchogenic cysts.

Malignant Tumors

Malignant tumors contain cancerous cells and have the potential to spread to other parts of the body. This category includes thymoma, lymphoma and neurogenic tumors.

Mediastinum Cysts

Congenital cysts are usually benign. For example, enteric cyst, bronchogenic cyst are in this group.

Symptoms of Mediastinum Diseases

The symptomatology of the disease is very dependent on the size of the tumor. Small tumors may not cause any symptoms.

They are usually detected during radiologic examinations performed for other reasons.

Diagnostic Methods

diagnosis

Radiological Investigations

Mediastinal radiology tests are highly effective in diagnosing diseases. These often include MRI of the mediastinum, mediastinal tomography and PET CT.

Biopsy and Pathologic Investigations

Mediastinal biopsy involves examining the tissues under a microscope and is highly valuable in making a definitive diagnosis.

Treatment of Mediastinum Diseases

When they are detected, benign ones are not allowed to grow further and are surgically removed. In the case of malignant tumors, those that are suitable for surgery should be removed as soon as possible and then treatment programs should be started.

The latest research in this field increases the effectiveness of treatment methods.

Mediastinal diseases include many diseases that can cause serious health problems and are important to treat. These diseases affect organs in the mediastinum and are caused by a variety of causes, such as tumors, infections and cysts. Therefore, it is vital to be aware of mediastinal diseases and choose the right treatment methods.

Mediastinal diseases are a medical specialty and should be treated by an experienced doctor.

Diagnosis of mediastinal diseases can be done through various radiological examinations and methods such as biopsy. Treatment options include surgical intervention, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. In the post-treatment period, patients need careful care and regular check-ups.
